Quick Navigation
This guide covers everything you need to know:
1. Exam Structure & Scoring
CIPLE A2 (CAPLE) assesses four skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking — in three scored papers. Official timing and weights on the CAPLE CIPLE page (verified September 2026):
| Component | Duration (CAPLE) | Weight of total |
|---|---|---|
| Reading + Writing (Compreensão da Leitura e Produção e Interação Escritas) | 1h 15m | 45% |
| Listening (Compreensão do Oral) | 30 minutes | 30% |
| Speaking (Produção e Interação Orais) | ~15 minutes per candidate pair | 25% |
Final bands (CAPLE): Suficiente 55–69%, Bom 70–84%, Muito Bom 85–100%. Pass for most candidates means clearing Suficiente — 55% overall.
2. Why balanced sections matter
CAPLE’s public CIPLE page publishes overall grade bands and component weights (45% / 30% / 25%). It does not list a separate per-component pass floor on that page. Because the weights are 45/30/25, a very weak section can still pull the overall score below 55% — so treat section scores as readiness signals, not only the average.
Prep tip (not an official CAPLE fail rule): if speaking is far below the rest, fix speaking before exam day even when the mock average looks “safe.”
3. Preparation Timeline
How long you need depends on your starting level:
- Complete beginners (A0): 12-16 weeks, 100+ hours
- Basic level (A1): 8-12 weeks, 80-100 hours
- Near A2 level: 6-8 weeks, 60-80 hours
- Native speakers: 2-3 weeks
4. Vocabulary & High-Frequency Words
You need approximately 1,000-1,500 words for passive understanding (reading and listening) and 500-800 words for active use (speaking and writing). Focus on these topics first:
- Daily routines and personal information
- Family and relationships
- Work and employment
- Shopping and food
- Travel and accommodation
- Health and hobbies
5. Speaking Section Tips
Speaking is the hardest section for most candidates. The exam has 3 tasks:
- Task 1: Conversation with examiner (5-6 minutes)
- Task 2: Description task (3-4 minutes)
- Task 3: Interaction with another candidate (3-4 minutes)

6. Writing Section Tips
Common mistakes that cost points:
- Grammar errors (verb tenses, agreement)
- Spelling mistakes in high-frequency words
- Not answering all parts of the question
- Using vocabulary that's too advanced or too simple
- Poor organization
7. Listening Section Tips
The listening section lasts 30 minutes (CAPLE). Focus on:
- High-frequency vocabulary
- European Portuguese speed and pronunciation
- Understanding context when you miss key words
- Clear notes under timed pressure
8. Exam Day Countdown
What to do in the final weeks:
- 2 weeks before: Run a full timed mock (Stage 1 diagnosis)
- 1 week before: Close vocabulary gaps; second scored mock if you have a report left
- Day before: Light review, get 8+ hours sleep — no full mock
- Exam day: Arrive 15-20 minutes early
9. Mock Tests & Practice
Mock tests are essential. They:
- Replicate real exam format and timing
- Help you identify weak sections
- Build exam confidence
- Show you exactly where you stand
Free preview first, then use the Mock Test Pack ($15 / 3 scored reports) for diagnosis plus confirmation runs — not a weekly timed mock every week unless you buy more reports.
